STORY: A press report from the Courier Mail in Queensland Australia says a power agency has warned Queensland businesses and emergency services to make contingency plans in case the Year 2000 computer bug disrupts supplies. Queensland Electricity Supply Industry spokeswoman Brenda Walker is reported as saying businesses and organisations, for which power losses could be critical, are being advised to make back-up plans in case supply is disrupted on January 1, 2000. The police service had been warned it should ensure essential stations could provide their own power in case there were supply problems, she said. She went to say the possibility of problems will be very minimal. Electricity staff would be on standby on New Year's Eve in case of problems. She said the power industry could not guarantee supply because of a range of factors outside its control. DATE: 2/24/99 |
