STORY: According to an article in The Australian, the National Australia Bank has joined a number of other blue-chip companies in canceling all staff leave for the New Year period, a precautionary measure to combat any millennium bug fallout. The paper reports other big companies, including Telstra, Qantas and the ANZ Bank, have taken similar measures as their extensive and expensive Year 2000 preparations gain pace. A NAB spokesman told the paper the bank recently had written to all staff, advising them it was making contingency plans for the millennium. When the National had a better idea of its staff needs during the critical clickover period, it would "unfreeze" the leave applications, he said. The ANZ, meanwhile, has cancelled leave for its middle and senior managers. ANZ spokesman Paul Edwards said the bank expected to have a large number of staff on duty that night, partly because Australia will be one of the first countries to experience any problems.
