STORY: A story appearing in the Nando Times says Britain's police, fire services and local authorities are failing to tackle the millennium computer bug problem and putting the public in danger. The story sites a report from Taskforce 2000, a privately funded organization seeking to raise awareness of the millennium computer bug problem. Taskforce 2000's report said it uncovered what it called a "depressing" picture throughout the country's emergency services. The report named the police forces of Avon & Somerset, Devon & Cornwall, Cheshire, Hampshire, Metropolitan (London) and Warwickshire as causing great concern and two - the National Criminal Investigation Service and Sussex - as being at serious risk. "Some fire brigades could be in very poor shape indeed. Local authorities in the main are well behind stated benchmarks and a number have done virtually nothing," the report said. In central government, the report said the Ministry of Defense, income tax authorities and road authorities were behind schedule. But Government departments handling pensions, customs duties and agriculture appeared to be doing a good job, the report said. DATE: 5/18/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
