STORY: Nation's utilities had set July 1 as compliance day California's power grid is officially ready for the Year 2000 according to the California Independent System Operator, the overseer of state's interconnected power system. Utilities across the United States had set July 1 as their deadline to fix all the Y2K computer bugs in their key systems, but it appears smaller utilities in rural areas still need more work. The North America Electric Reliability Council says that larger utilities have repaired their computer systems while some smaller rural utilities have not announced their Y2K status. Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power tell the Los Angeles Times that they are ready for 2000. Pacific Gas & Electric, a subsidiary of PG&E Corp., tells the Times it's testing is 98% complete and will be finished in the third quarter. All the major California utilities plan to keep extra employees working Dec. 31 to handle any emergencies. Edison plans to dispatch 500 extra employees on New Year's Eve.
