STORY: According to a report in the Chicago Sun Times, the water will flow, the ridges will go up and down and the traffic lights will operate normally when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, so say Chicago officials. Of the city's 2,760 traffic lights, only 100 have computer chips that must be altered to keep the lights blinking on Jan. 1. The two water filtration plants and 12 pumping stations should flow, because they are old-fashioned mechanical operations. So far, the city has found that 96 percent of its embedded computer chips, which run such things as police radios, fire alarms and elevators, will have no problem. Assessments of the airports should be done next month. Rewriting computer code and buying new equipment has brought 64 percent of the city's computer systems into compliance. The remainder should be done by summer. DATE: 4/13/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
