STORY: A third of foreign countries have not responded to airport status survey A third of the countries that have flight operations have not respondent to an important survey that will assess the Y2K readiness of airports around the world. Fifty-three countries are two months late in responding to the survey by the International Civil Aviation Organization, a U.N.-based group that sets international flight standards. Kenneth Mead, inspector general of the Transportation Department, told a joint meeting of two US House subcommittees that 18 of the non-responding countries were in Asia; 12 in South America; 10 in Africa; eight in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe; four in the Middle East; and one in Europe. Testimonies by a Government Accounting Office official indicated 33 percent of 146 international airlines surveyed by the Federal Aviation Administration have fixed their computer Y2k problems. U.S. and Canadian airlines said recently their systems were 95 percent ready and would be fully prepared by the end of the September according to Reuters. The FAA says its completed its Y2K repairs and is currently working on contingency plans in the event its Y2K fixes fail. Despite assurances by the major air carriers that the skies will be safe to fly on New Year's Eve, several carriers have announced that they will not be flying.
