STORY: Huge European phone company says millions of customers don't have to worry Six months before the supposed Y2K computer bug will hit, France Telecom says its entire network is prepared for the Year 2000. The giant European telephone company - with services in 50 countries - has finished a series of tests that a company press release says completes its Y2K readiness program. France Telecom spent nearly 1 billionfrancs and used 500 people to complete the project to ensure its computers wonıt fall prey to the Y2K computer date crisis. Despite company assurances itıs ready, France Telecom will mobilize on January 1, 2, and 3 of 2000, a staff to make sure there are no Y2K related problems. Extra staff will also be on assignment until March 2000 to insure that the leap year date of February 29, 2000 goes by without a hitch. Although the Year 2000 has received allot of attention, some older software systems and equipment with older embedded computer chips may not recognize February 29, 2000 as a day that exists. Although France Telecom's network may be Y2K complaint, like every other telephone company in the world, it realizes on neighboring telephone countries to complete international calls.
