STORY: An article in the Miami Herald says the French government has issued a warning that shops or manufacturers which have sold items not free of the Y2K millennium bug may be fined for consumer fraud or for trading faulty goods. "There will be legal action for consumer fraud against vendors selling goods with two-digit clocks which pose problems for the year 2000," a junior small business minister said. That was in reference to computer chips which count the year only by its last two numbers which means that everyday items such as microwaves, cars and mobile telephones could cease to work properly when the year rolls over into the next millennium. According to the article, Lebranchu said shop owners may also be hauled before the court if they sold items unable to cope with the change of date in the three years preceding 2000.
