STORY: According to an article by the Detroit Free Press, tens of thousands of employees in Michigan have been told not to plan year-end vacations because of concerns over the Year 2000 computer problem. So far, the vacation pinch affects 8,800 workers at Comerica, 8,400 at Detroit Edison and 2,000 at computer service company Syntel, according to officials at those companies. The Free Press says an informal telephone survey also indicates that other major Michigan employers could decide to restrict vacation plans by late spring if they feel vulnerable. MichCon will have a heavier-than-normal staff on New Year's Day. Consumers Energy also plans to increase the number of employees working New Year's Eve, but the gas and electric utility has not determined exactly how many employees will be needed at sites such as power plants and substations. Ameritech hasn't told employees they can't take vacations in the days preceding New Year's. But spokeswoman Sara Snyder said the phone company's managers have been told they could be required to work. But at Detroit Edison, none of the utilities' 8,400 employees will be allowed to plan vacations for the last few days of 1999 until the company can determine who needs to be on duty to solve any potential Y2K problems. A final decision should be made by the end of summer. Source: Detroit Free Press (Full Text) DATE: 2/22/99 |
