STORY: According to a story appearing in the Bergen Record, the top computer guru in the New Jersey Governor's office assured the Assembly Appropriations Committee that state government is on schedule to prepare computers for the year 2000 and will have contingency plans for any glitches that occur. "I think we're going to be fine," Wendy Rayner, the state's chief information officer, said after the hearing. "Every day, I'm getting more confident it's going to be a non-event of any magnitude." She said there might be some inconveniences to residents, but she does not subscribe to doomsday predictions. Of more than 700 computer systems in state government, 195 are considered "critical," including those involving motor vehicle records and pension and unemployment checks, Rayner told the committee. Of those, 91 percent are completely ready for 2000. The rest of the critical systems have been upgraded, although tests have not yet been completed. All critical systems should be Y2K compatible by June 30, she said. Of the more than 500 other systems in use throughout the state government, 89 percent are ready, and Rayner said she was confident that all would be by the end of the year.
