STORY: More than a third of New Zealanders say they are unlikely to prepare for the millennium bug, although almost everyone has heard about it and most are concerned, a survey says. New Zealand's The Press is report the results of The Y2K (Year 2000) Readiness Commission's first big public-opinion research study of New Zealanders' awareness, concern and understanding about the Year 2000 or "Y2K problem," also called the "millennium bug". Commission director Clare Pinder said it could not be complacent with 31 per cent not "really intending to do anything at all". "They feel that it's just not an issue, not really important enough to worry about, so we need to get the messages through to that third." This lack of concern comes despite a Local Government NZ survey in April finding the country's largest cities do not yet have plans in place to ensure water and wastewater services in the event of a year 2000 computer failure. However, 30 per cent of households have already made plans, 14 per cent say they definitely will make plans, and another 21 per cent will make plans when they have more information.
