STORY: Oklahoma power Y2K OK but everyone testing lights could cause problems In an odd twist, power officials in Oklahoma are urging customers to avoid testing their lights just after midnight New Year's Day to see if the Y2k bug has hit. Power officials are reportedly confident that they have solved their Y2K computer bug issues and but they say they can't guarantee uninterrupted service if everyone turns on lights after midnight. They say the surge in demand could cause outages unrelated to the Y2K computer bug. Officials are reportedly more worried about customer behavior and winter weather problems than their power grid falling prey to Y2K. Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co., the state's largest electric utility say it's prepared to deliver uninterrupted service to it's 700,000 customers in Oklahoma and Arkansas. "We're pretty concerned about consumer behavior. We've got to figure out how to tell people to stay normal," Cynthia Stewart representing Tulsa-based Public Service Co. of Oklahoma told The Daily Oklahoman. Public education was cited as key by officials to avoid any problems. DATE: 07/26/99 |
