STORY: In a report from New Zealand's The Press, United leader Peter Dunne has challenged Prime Minister Jenny Shipley to spend New Year's Eve in a plane to allay concerns over the Year 2000 computer problem. He said Mrs. Shipley should follow the lead of Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who is reported to be considering a similar invitation from Australian Communications Minister Richard Alston. Mr. Dunne has been criticizing the Government for being slow to ensure New Zealand's essential services are Year 2000 compliant. According to the article, Mrs. Shipley said through a spokesman that she would be enjoying millennium celebrations along with all New Zealanders. The spokesman said Mrs. Shipley would be taking part in official millennium celebrations, and that might or might not require flying. DATE: 3/08/99 |
