STORY: According to a report from the Associated Press appearing in the USA Today, several Russian insurance companies have hiked their rates for airlines because of potential problems caused by the year 2000 computer glitch. The insurance companies are concerned that Russia's airlines -- many of which are broke and have poor safety records -- haven't prepared their computers, Viktor Gorlov, deputy director of the Russian Federal Aviation Service, told the Interfax news agency. The story says Russia's government and businesses have been slow to tackle the problem because of more pressing issues -- including a severe cash shortage -- over the past few years. But Gorlov said the insurance companies' fears were unfounded because the aviation service is ''doing everything possible'' to make sure the computer bug doesn't strike Russia's airlines. Gorlov admitted, however, that the Federal Aviation Service won't be able to enforce testing of all the airlines' computer equipment because of a lack of funding.
