STORY: The African National Congress reports the South African cabinet has agreed in principle to declare December 31 this year and January 2 next year public holidays to ensure a smooth transition to the new millennium. The move would allow for four non-working days for Y2K system testing. January 2 next year falls on a Sunday, and the principle that the Monday then becomes a public holiday will apply. A spokesman for the cabinet says the extra holidays is purely a precautionary measure, and not because the government expected problems with adapting computer systems to the new millennium. South Africa had decided not to grant senior civil servants leave over the transition to the year 2000. The spokesman said he was not aware of plans by the SA Reserve Bank to print extra money with a view to the transition to the year 2000.
