STORY: The largest trade association for the software and information industry wants the United States Senate "as a matter of urgent priority" to pass legislation that would discourage unnecessary Y2K litigation and encourage remediation. The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) made its call as the Senate prepares to consider the "Y2K Act," a bipartisan bill introduced by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). "The clock is ticking, the countdown is on, and time is running out. Either the United States Senate exhibits political courage and acts to protect the jobs and livelihood of hundreds of thousands of high tech workers, or it allows itself to be captured by the interests of those who see Y2K as an opportunity to enrich themselves from unnecessary litigation," said Ken Wasch, president of SIIA. "This legislation is supported by hundreds of high tech companies, large and small. It is legislation that preserves the rights of those who suffer real injury, but it also discourages frivolous lawsuits", says Wasch. The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) is the principal trade association of the software code and information content industry. SIIA represents more than 1,400 leading high tech companies that develop and market software and electronic content for business, education, consumers and the Internet.
