STORY:
Swiss banks test for year 2000 bug

Swiss banks will join together to test if their systems are ready for the arrival of the year 2000, the Associated Press reports the Swiss Bankers' Association as saying. The banks are trying to guard against the so-called millennium bug, which could disrupt computer operations on Jan. 1, 2000 when computers designed only to read the last two digits of a year may assume it is 1900.

The tests will concentrate on links between organizations and the association is recommending that banks test their internal systems at the same time. Ruedi Spitzli, information technology chief of the private Bank Vontobel, said he anticipated few problems.

``I think that most Swiss banks will be eager to test their systems' preparedness for the year 2000,'' he said according to the AP. ``We have already run numerous tests in-house to iron out the wrinkles and expect relatively smooth sailing.
