STORY: The millennium bug has started its ascent on modern computer systems, according to a spokesperson of the Ministry of Health in Lausanne, Switzerland. Computers in the reception area were inaccessible for two days at the beginning of this year. The problem occurred earlier than expected because the Swiss hospital's software makes projections far into the future whenever a patient is admitted. Because the hospital's computer systems were not prepared for the year 2000, they read the date as the first of January 1900 and crashed.
