STORY: According to a Reuters story appearing on CNN Interactive, the 2000 millennium bug poses no threat to Taiwan's defense as all military computer and data systems are on track to be Y2K-compliant by June. The Defense Ministry says it had reprogrammed or replaced all of its computer systems including weaponry, medical equipment and office automation systems. Final checkups were to be completed on or before June 30, a government deadline. Taiwan keeps strong armed forces to counter communist China's standing vow of retaking the island by force if it abandons its avowed goal of eventual reunion and opts for independence. Potential problems lurk among Taiwan's one million small- and medium-sized companies, many of which have yet to take significant action. Authorities say some firms may have lulled themselves into complacency on the faulty assumption that Taiwan is not at risk because it counts this year not as 1999 but as 88 -- the 88th year since the 1911 founding of the Republic of China. Experts say virtually all software programs using Taiwan's dating system remain vulnerable to Y2K risk because underlying computers are based on the Gregorian calendar.
