STORY: According to the BBC, health workers are threatening to strike if they are not offered overtime pay for working over the millennium. Public service union Unison voted to authorize a union-wide vote on a two-day strike to protest at the government's refusal to pay any overtime for staff working over the New Year period. The reports says delegates at the union's annual health conference in Brighton had earlier booed Health Secretary Frank Dobson when he confirmed that there would be no nationally-agreed payments for working over the millennium. Unison, which represents 460,000 workers, has called for big bonuses for working through the New Year celebrations. Junior doctors have also submitted a claim for overtime pay for working on New Year's Eve. The article says the union believes it's members will missing out on the millennium celebrations and they will have to work harder. They expect increased emergency admissions due to the New Year celebrations and an increased alcohol consumption. In addition, they may face problems caused by the Millennium Bug, although health managers say they are on course to beat any glitches. DATE: 5/03/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
