STORY: Beginning Oct 1 US will list countries to avoid because of Y2K concerns Countries that President Clinton's Y2K czar deems not complaint with the Y2K computer bug will be black-flagged by the US starting no later than October. 1.The head of the President's Council on Year 2000, John Koskinen says US obligations to travelers and business partners has created a need to post the information. "We have an obligation to be as candid and clear with the public as we can," he told Reuters. He said the risk of infrastructure failures was greatest in Asia, Africa and Latin America, because governments took too long in addressing the issue. The information will be released and updated by the State Department as part of its regular country-by-country travel and business advisories. Regarding the Y2K issue in the US, Koskinen said that federal mission-critical systems would be Y2K complaint. Koskinen believes any repercussions of the Y2K problems should subside two weeks into January 2000. An "Information Coordinating Center" is being planned that will monitor the federal government's rollover to the Year 2000. The center will be ready to go before Sept 9. Experts believe the 9-9-99 date could cause problems with some legacy computer systems. The center will be operational through the leap year date of February 29, another date that could trip up some computer systems. Source: Reuters DATE: 07/13/99 |
