STORY: A Reuters report says a U.S. Senate plan to protect companies against lawsuits stemming from the year 2000 (Y2K) computer problem have stalled as Republicans and Democrats sparred over gun control and other legislative priorities. The proposed law would delay the filing of Y2K-related lawsuits during a 90-day cooling-off period and make it harder for consumers to sue companies because of computer crashes next Jan. 1. But minority Democrats insisted that Republicans give them more time to debate gun control and defeated a procedural motion to bring up the computer bill. That motion required 60 votes. In the Senate, Republicans hold 55 seats and the Democrats hold 45. Last month Democrats blocked a vote on the same bill because Republicans would not let the Senate consider a minimum-wage amendment.A similar measure limiting lawsuits has been approved by the House of Representatives.
