STORY: The Irish Times says a massive millennium street party is just one event planned by Belfast City Council to celebrate 2000. The council has announced a 16-month calendar of events including the staging of the World Irish Dancing Championships in the city next April. Announcing the programme of celebrations planned for Belfast between September 1999 and January 2001, the Lord Mayor, Cllr David Alderdice, said it would incorporate "something for everyone". According to the Irish Times, the council aimed to provide "an exciting programme which will be enjoyed by as large an audience as possible, both locally and internationally, and which will further enhance the growing reputation which Belfast is gaining as a vibrant and successful city," Alderdice is quoted as saying. Planned events include a motor festival of speed, a city centre sports event, a Halloween carnival and the "Big City Bash" on New Year's Day. The citizens of Belfast will also be able to count down to the millennium with a new clock installed at the front gates of the City Hall. DATE: 4/28/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
