Mayor Thomas M. Menino has announced a series of plans to commemorate the arrival of the new millennium in Boston. Joining in the announcement were members of Boston 2000, a group of civic leaders assembled by the Mayor to plan and coordinate Boston's official millennium activities.
The first series of initiatives announced today include:
Boston 2000 Millennium Festival: July 1-July 16, 2000
Boston's own impresario David Mugar has joined Boston 2000 to coordinate a series of public events that will extend the excitement of Boston's annual July 4th celebrations. In conjunction with the Boston Parks Department, the Boston Pops will offer a special concert for Bostonians in Franklin Park (Pops in the Park). Other activities will be scheduled to honor Boston's many ethnic and cultural traditions. All of this will be in addition to celebrations planned by Harborfest and Sail Boston 2000.
Campaign to make Boston the Healthiest Major City in America
Boston's world class medical institutions will come together to improve the health of the citizens who live here under a public/private collaborative campaign. The campaign will have two specific goals: to enroll all of the City's children in health care coverage, making Boston one of the first major cities (if not the first) to provide 100% coverage to its children; and to implement the Mayor's Crusade Against Cancer by significantly increasing the percentage of Bostonians who are screened for cancer. This effort is being coordinated by Boston 2000 board members Elaine Ullian, President of the Boston Medical Center, and Deborah Jackson, Vice President of The Boston Foundation, working with the Boston Public Health Commission, representatives of Boston's community health centers, community based organizations and health care industry.
A Celebration of Freedom
The Boston Freedom Award Program: In spirit of Bostonians who gathered under the Liberty Tree during the American Revolution, the award will recognize individuals who have put themselves at personal risk to gain freedom for others. Historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr., whose father memorialized Boston's Liberty Tree in an essay nearly fifty years ago, will serve on the selection committee being formed by Boston 2000 the award has been advanced by a generous gift from Andrew Wilson, founder and Director of Boston Duck Tours.
Liberty Tree Park: Boston 2000 will work with the City's Parks Department, Chinatown Main Street, and other area organizations to install a new park and commemorative tree on the site of the original Liberty Tree, at the corner of Washington and Boylston Streets. In conjunction with Linda McConchie, Executive Director of the Freedom Trail Foundation, Boston 2000 will apply to have the site added to Boston's Freedom Trail and develop a curriculum for local students on Boston's contributions to freedom in American history.
Boston to light bridges to illuminate waterfront: Thomson Financial, in the Seaport District, has generously offered to partner with Boston 2000 to light the Congress Street Bridge over the Fort Point Channel in time for the ground breaking of the new Convention and Exhibition Center in the year 2000. Boston 2000 is seeking another private sponsor to light the City's North Washington Street Bridge between the North End and Charlestown . Boston to plant 2,000 legacy trees: The City will beautify its neighborhoods and parks for the new century by planting 2000 new legacy trees by the end of 2000.
New 100 acre park along Charles River: A gift to Boston for the next century. In November 2000, Boston will officially celebrate the former Gardner Street Landfill in West Roxbury as a new 100 acre park, the largest recent addition to Boston's inventory of parks. It will replace a garbage dump and provide greater access to the Charles River.
"Boston is a city with so much history and so much future. Thanks to the many civic leaders who are joining me in preparing our city for the new millennium, Boston has a lot to look forward to in the year 2000," said Mayor Menino.
