STORY:
David Bowie will play a show billed as "the first official concert of the new millennium" in Gisborne, New Zealand. Gisborne, on the east coast of the country and tucked into a point on the International Date Line that bends around New Zealand and Fiji, calls itself the first city on the planet to see the sun rise each day. Situated there, Bowie will take the stage at 12:01 a.m. on New Year's Day, 2000. The information comes from Live Daily and quotes a CNN report as saying Bowie will write a song especially for the occasion. New Zealand band Split Enz will re-form for only the second time since 1984 to perform at the show, according to the report. Note: Calendar watchers point out that the new millennium officially begins in the first moments of the year 2001. Additionally, while Gisborne may be the first "city" to see the sun rise, the first spot on the planet to experience sunlight on the first day of the new year will be Antarctica.
