STORY: Drummers will be in unison in every time zone on New Year's Eve By Elizabeth Scott A new era, a new millennium is a time when many religious and spiritual groups are calling for a stronger focus on peace and humanity. The All One Tribe Foundation of Taos, NM is one such group. Focusing on the soothing beat of the drum, the organizers of Drum 2000 are preparing to welcome the new millennium with drumming in unison for the last hours of December 31, 1999. The drumming will occur in corresponding time zones around the world. The Foundation believes that this drumming will affirm their "collective vision for Unity." Historically this event recognizes the UN's Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples. Singing is also part of the event, with the song "As We Drum, We Are One" recited throughout the world simultaneously. Video broadcasting of event highlights will occur concurrently. "Our vision has long been to emphasize our shared qualities as Earth-family citizens - our Unity - while celebrating the beauty of our diversity," states the event invitation. Because All One Tribe believes drumming is a universal language, they hope to share the "physical, psychological and spiritual benefits of drumming" with people around the world. The Drum 2000 event to promote global harmony has not only spiritual roots, but scientific ones as well. Studies on humans appear to prove that drumming can reduce anxiety. Not only have drums been used in milestone events through out the millennium, recent studies states that drumming may assist in human healing. According to the New York Times, medical studies have shown that the relaxation effects of drumming have helped improved the lives of those suffering form Alzheimer's disease and autism. Other studies indicate that the brain requires rhythm for proper development. According to Barry Quinn, PhD., a clinical psychologist specializing in neurobiofeedback in Colorado Springs, CO, biofeedback also indicates that brainwave activity may be altered by drumming, in turn reducing stress. Ancient beliefs or the most high tech science, both point to the benefits of drumming. Event organizers are including well-known drummers from every continent. Funds raised by the foundations will assist various indigenous peoples, including the drought stricken Tarahumara's of Mexico as well as Taos Pueblo Head Start Programs.
