Durban South African Events Announced

According to the Sunday Times of Durban South Africa, millennium celebrations in Durban start in September and are aimed at positioning the city as South Africa's premier tourist destination for the year 2000 and beyond.

A Durban marketing consortium, Andrzej Kiepiela Associates, has been appointed to develop the business plan and co-ordinate Durban's millennium celebrations. Andrzej Kiepiela said Durban would mark the millennium by celebrating the city's diversity, unity and heritage.

Plans were underway to host at least four major events:

• A Durban Beachfront Festival: This will involve day and night celebrations at the end of December and beginning of January 2000. It will include concerts and sporting events on the beachfront. A New Year party - possibly an open air concert - is being considered for North Beach.
• Kings Park Soccer Stadium and Entertainment Festival: Celebrations will include cultural events and concerts.
• ICC Durban Millennium Celebrations: The first biggest millennium banquet and evening of entertainment for 2 500 guests.
• Durban Point and Port Festival: This involves day and night celebrations focusing on the city's relationship with the sea and maritime tradition. Events will include regattas, port-related recreational activities, and concerts. The New Year's celebration could comprise a fashion show and rave party in N Shed. People will converge at the Millennium Harbour Festival by land and by sea.

Other smaller events will take place throughout the Durban Metro region from September. A carnival parade, similar to that seen in Paris during the opening of the Football World Cup in 1998 is also being planned.

Highlights of events from Durban will be broadcast world-wide on Millennium Television Network.
