STORY: London's Daily Mirror says a 100ft wide image of Big Ben's face will be beamed on to The Mirror's skyscraper headquarters as part of a spectacular Millennium laser show. It will appear at 11pm on New Year's Eve on all four sides of the Canary Wharf tower, directly across the River Thames from the Millennium Dome in Greenwich. The laser projection will grow brighter until both hands point to midnight, marking the dawning of a new century. The Mirror says organisers also plan to amplify Big Ben chimes. The show is the brainchild of artistic sculptor Richard Barnbrook as part of an extravaganza at the Dome in south east London. The Millennium Spectacular laser show will chart the evolution of Man and end with a phoenix rising from a ball of light over the top of the Dome. The image will rise up to meet 12 beams of light - one for each five minutes of the final hour of 1999. The Mirror says Minister for London Nick Raynsford confirmed that he was considering Barnbrook's ideas. Source: The Mirror (Full Text) DATE: 2/18/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
