STORY: African country will build a dome of their own for the next century Nigeria Africa will be building a millennium dome of its own say government officials. While it won't be on the same scale as London's Millennium Dome, Nigeria's ministry of Culture and Tourism says it will be "monumental" in scale and the centerpiece for the countries entry into the 21st century. The government also announced plans for some of its New Year's Eve celebrations and entertainment. According to Agence France Presse, a massive musical concert with costume parades, traditional dancing, a massed choir, live bands and fireworks has also been proposed for the central Eagle Square of Abuja Nigeria. President Olusegun Obasanjo will also make a speech to the nation one minute after midnight. Two plays depicting the struggle against colonialism will be staged at venues around the country say officials. There will also be a special Durbar -- a traditional festival-in Kano, the largest city in northern Nigeria and a special boat regatta at Oron, in Akwa Ibom state in the southeast. There will also be a book fair to showcase Nigeria's literary works, including books and plays by Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka and author Chinua Achebe, say officials. The plans have to receive approval from parliament before organization begins. Source: Agence France Presse DATE: 9/01/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
