STORY: Japan celebrated Year 2000 with tightened security and quiet reflection (Everything2000) Tens of thousands lined Tokyo Bay for a fireworks show, while millions of others headed to Buddhist temples to meditate as the Year 2000 arrived in Japan. A contrast in celebration in a country that is ringing in good fortune in the Year of the Dragon. About 25,000 people showed up in Tokyo for a countdown at the capital's new seaside waterfront area. The crowd was treated also to a concert of traditional drums and a light show. With so many people gathered together at one location, security was tight. Japan increased security at the celebration because of potential Y2K problems and a wave of explosion and fires that police say may be linked to ultra-leftist groups. A much quieter celebration was taking place at the same time at Buddhist temples. Monks ring out the old year by clanging their temple bells 108 times-once for each of the 108 evils of the world. After that, visitors offered prayers, bought good luck charms and placed money in the offering boxes. Source: Associated Press DATE: 12/31/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
