STORY: After months of speculation about whether Barbra Streisand would take the stage to offer a swansong to the 20th century, the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas declared it had signed the reclusive diva for a New Year's Eve performance. A story from Reuters says the concert will be Streisand's first public performance since the end of her 1994 six-city tour, not counting a 1996 fund-raiser for President Clinton. "There is no question that Ms. Streisand's performance has been the single most sought-after entertainment event for this once-in-a-millennium occasion," Richard Sturm, MGM Grand's vice president for worldwide entertainment, said in a statement. There was no word on how much the singer-actress-director would be paid for the show, but earlier news reports speculated that the sum could be up to $10 million. The ticket price would certainly seem to support that fee. MGM said the price of admission to the 13,000-seat venue would start at $500, with "Golden Circle" spots running $2,500. Strum also said it could be Streisand's last U.S. show. The singer said she was adjusting to her new role as a wife, but said she might sing in other countries. "My priorities have shifted. I want to work less these days, travel and enjoy my life," Streisand said in a statement. "If this engagement goes well, I may decide later to appear in a few cities around the world that my husband and I would like to visit," she said. She married her second husband, actor James Brolin, at her Malibu estate last July. DATE: 4/29/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
