STORY: Tidal flows will melt clock made of ice columns for a unique countdown One of the most unique New Year's Eve celebrations will take place in Chalkis Greece. Chalkis Millennium 2000 that will take place on 31 December 1999. The unique multimedia project is "Apomihanis theos" ("Deus Ex Machina") a concept by the architect Tasos Marinakis that will be a great start to a ne w millennium. The project consists of 17 huge ice columns of 3 meters height (0,82 X 0,82) and 3 tons weight that will be placed on the place "Stroggylo" next to the water of Euripus Chanell, where world's famous and unique tidal phenomenon occurs. The currents of the water are going up (North) for 6 hours and after 8 minutes of stillness turn down (South) for 6 hours. This unique phenomenon is due to the magnetics forces that the Moon and the Sun exert to water. Time's fluidity is the main theme of "Apomihanis theos" for the ice columns, this "solid liquid" is going to be liquified within 4-6 days and the energy that is needed to freeze the big columns is going to return to the sea. This complex of ice columns will function like an alternative clock, a timer that counts the transition of the forms of energy. Around this ephemeral construction, a hundred floating lights will symbolize, with their non-synchronized flashing, the hundred years that have passed by and which probably constitute a collective memory for most of us. These years are not those that are going to give rhythm to life. On the contrary It is the phenomenon of the liquification of ice, or the flow of the currents. Classical Arias and a dance performance of the liquification of the ice are going to drive the night to its climax. The laser rays and the fireworks are going to create a night of magic for all the citizens of the town, who are invited to celebrate the new years eve, next to the sea.
