STORY: Spring Hill postponing New Year's Eve party by 50 days Spring Hill Florida is delaying its New Year's Eve party until February 19th because of possible problems with the computer Y2K bug. The celebration will be 50 days after the rest of the world rings in the new century. "We're not real warm and fuzzy about taking on a huge party" on Dec. 31, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Deanna Dammer told the St. Petersburg Times. "For us it would mean that we would be stretched a little thin. We need to be prepared for the possibility of power problems . . . just service problems and what could happen because of that. "We just don't know what may or may not happen that night," Dammer said. County leaders have now scheduled the New Year's celebration to coincide with their annual Heritage Days Festival at the Sand Hill Scout Reservation. So far, that's all the organizers know about the event. No activities have been planned. Organizers want to combine a celebration of the new millennium with an appreciation of the past. Spring Hill is not the only city to delay its New Year's Eve celebration. Gilbert Arizona is planning a "I Survived Y2K Party" on January 15 in lieu of a city wide party on December 31. A real New Year's Eve party in Gilbert was rejected because officials believed there could be a lack of police and fire personnel to handle large crowds and emergencies if Y2K related utility problems arose DATE: 8/24/98 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
