STORY: Australians got their first opportunity to buy tickets to the Sydney Olympic Games when five million of the 9.6 million tickets available went on sale in Australia Sunday May 31st. Buyers have 48 days to return order forms they received in the Sunday papers with full payment. Popular events such as the opening and closing ceremonies, swimming finals and some track and field, gymnastics and basketball sessions are expected to be oversubscribed, with a random ballot used to decide who gets tickets. The ticket books, inserted in News Ltd. newspapers under a sponsorship deal, are 52 pages long, including a day-by-day program, venue map and transport guides. Prices range from $12.35 at sports such as rowing and baseball to $900 for the best seats at the opening and closing ceremonies. Seventy percent of all tickets will cost less than $39.
