STORY: By planning ahead, British couple saves 82% on airline ticket for New Year's Eve (Everything2000) - It's a story that procrastinators could never match. A British couple, thinking ahead, way ahead, bought a return first class airfare back in 1983 for travel on the high priced, 1999 New Year's Eve holiday. Now, 16 years later, the airline, British Airways says it will honor the ticket resulting in savings of 82-percent off the current first class price. According to a Reuter's report, Peter and Marguerite Harrison reserved two first-class return tickets from London to Sydney Australia in 1983 for pounds 999 ($1,607 US) each. Currently, the same tickets sell for pounds 5,773 ($9,240 US), reflecting the inflated rate airlines are charging for millennium travel. The Harrisons reportedly bought the tickets to attend a millennium party thrown by a friend who is now 90 years old. Fortunately for the Harrisons, British Airways will be one of the major airlines flying over the millennium holiday. Several airlines have announced that they won't be flying because of computer Y2K concerns. Source: Reuters DATE: 8/17/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
