STORY: Airline cites low bookings and possible Y2K fears as reasons American Airlines says it will cut some New Year's Eve and New Year's Day flights because of low bookings that could be related to years of the computer Y2K bug. The airline is canceling about 20 percent of its flights on Dec. 31 and about 5 percent of its flights on Jan. 1. Bookings for the entire Christmas-New Year's holiday season remained strong, despite the softness on those days says an American spokesman. Other U.S. airlines, including Continental Airlines and United have reportedly said they had not made any plans to cancel flights on the New Year holiday. Some foreign carriers have canceled flying this New Year's Eve, including Vietnam Airlines, Poland's LOT airlines, Ryan Air and Virgin Atlantic Airways. American said it would operate its other normal flights on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, including a flight on which Federal Aviation Administrator Jane Garvey will be traveling.
