STORY: With the last opportunity to conceive the millennium baby fast approaching, Kaitlyn and Michael currently lead as the most popular baby names going into the next century, according to a poll by BabyCenter.com, while more unusual names, such as Milo and Millicent, may be used as middle names to commemorate the first babies of the new year. "Though choosing popular or traditional first names will continue into the new millennium, many parents will look to commemorate a millennium baby by choosing a unique middle name, such as Millennium or Century," predicts Clare Ellis, BabyCenter.com editor-in-chief. Kaitlyn and Michael were also the top baby names for 1998. Kaitlyn was a first time front-runner, while Michael continued its 35 year reign at the top spot. The BabyCenter.com poll indicates that other popular picks for millennium boy names are Jacob, followed by William and Christopher. For girls, Kaitlyn was followed closely by Emily and Hannah. "Parents grapple with choosing a baby name for months and sometimes even longer," said Ellis. "BabyCenter.com offers fun and interactive online tools to help them with their selection." Webby-award winning BabyCenter.com publishes a list of the top 100 baby names in the United States for 1998, 1997, and 1996, as well as the top 10 names for every year back to 1890. The site also has the top 10 girls' and boys' names for each state in 1998. Additional assistance for parents looking for a name can be found with the interactive Baby Name Finder, a database with more than 10,000 names searchable by ethnic origin, first letter, number of syllables, and meaning. All of the site's baby naming lists and tools can be found at http://www.babycenter.com/babyname. Source: Press Release DATE: 4/07/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
