STORY: Mass nuptials set for dawn on New Year's Day Millennium organizers in Bangkok Thailand are jumping on the growing popularity millennium weddings. They are looking for hundreds of couples wishing to get married at midnight on New Year's Eve as part of a mass wedding ceremony. According to press reports, organizers say they have signed up hundreds of couples from Thailand and neighboring countries.Organizers say more than 1100 couples have enrolled for the event; 600 couples are from Thailand, 300 are listed as foreign couples, 100 couples are from Singapore and another 100 couples are from Taiwan. Tourism authorities say the Bangkok millennium marriage extravaganza is part of a tourism campaign to promote the kingdom as a honeymoon destination. Organizers want a total of 2,000 couples for a traditional Thai wedding that will last from New Year's Eve until dawn on New Year's Day. The ceremony will be held at an exhibition hall in Muang Thong Thani, which was a venue for the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok. One participant said she paid 9,999 baht ($270 US) for the group wedding ceremony, which includes food to offer to Buddhist monks, traditional Thai wedding ceremonies from four different regions, and a water blessing ceremony to be presented by Thai VIPs. Another participant and a groom-to-be, reportedly says he would have had to spend at least 50,000 baht ($1350 US) for a wedding ceremony that would not be nearly as grand as the mass wedding is planning to be.
