STORY: 87 million-pound, 27-hour live broadcast could have world's largest audience (Everything 2000) - The British Broadcasting Corporation's plans for a 27-hour live broadcast of New Year's Eve celebrations around the world will be the largest event the BBC's ever produced. The BBC will join the American network PBS and 57 other countries in sharing the costs of producing the event that features broadcasts from television networks that crisscross the globe. 1500 producers, reporters, presenters and technical staff will be covering the first dawn of the new century at the Chatham Islands near the international date line and follow midnight around the world to the last celebration in Western Samoa on the other side of the date line. Britain's broadcasts will include the opening of London's Millennium Dome in Greenwich, the last sunset of the 20th century at Land's End and the first dawn at the White Cliffs of Dover. According to news accounts by The Mirror, the BBC hopes to cover the birth of Britain's first millennium baby. Viewers can look forward to seeing celebrations from The Great Wall of China, the Millennium Society's concert at the Great Pyramids in Giza Egypt, Stonehenge and Table Mountain in South Africa.
