STORY: Promoter can't find a sponsor and may cancel concert A New Year's Eve show billed as the first concert of the new millennium starring David Bowie and opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa will probably have to be canceled according to the show's promoter. Bruce Bell, who headed the plan to hold the concert in Gisborne in New Zealand, reportedly says he may have to cancel the concert after failed attempts to find a sponsor. He also reportedly said poor ticket sales and a disappointing response overseas have added to the concert's troubles. The organizers of Gisborne's centerpiece event had hoped for about 10,000 tourists to attend, but all flights close to New Year's Eve have been booked mainly by New Zealanders aiming to get home for the millennium celebrations. Bell reportedly said the future of the main acts was unclear because of contractual agreements with them. "Pressure from those acts and those contractual arrangements are heavy and we have only got a few days to satisfy details of those contracts," Bell reportedly said. A concert appearance by pianist John Tesh and Gisborne's Millennium Wall is unrelated to the Bowie concert and is still a go.
