New Year's Eve Bank Holiday in Britain

Queen announces day off for New Year's Eve preparations and not for Y2K bug

The Queen announced an extra Bank Holiday this New Year's Eve to allow workers to prepare for New Year's Eve celebrations. According to ITN, the new holiday was originally proposed last year by the government, but was finally given the royal seal of approval in the latest yearly proclamation of Bank Holidays.

Prior to the announcement, talks were held with representatives of local government, the Churches, emergency services and financial, business and transport sectors. 85 per cent agreed that the extra holiday was a good idea.

Culture Secretary Chris Smith, whose department was originally behind theplan, said the extra holiday would give people time to prepare for the party.
