Britain Planning Huge Millennium Lotteries

Pounds 1 million prize in scratch off game, pounds 10million in drawing

Lottery organizers in Britain are planning a pounds 1million ($1.6 million US), millennium scratch-off lottery game which if approved, would be the biggest scratch-off lottery prize ever offered in the UK. The ticket will cost pounds 2 ($3.20 US).

The game would be competing with a New Year's Eve lottery drawing offered by Camelot that has top prize of pounds 10 million ($16 million US). Tickets to the Camelot drawing will cost pounds 5 ($8 US) but will offer two chances of winning. The drawing is expected to create 25 millionaires.

Until now, lottery officials have been reluctant to offer such a large prize for a scratchcard lottery, but slumping ticket sales has changed all that. Still, officials want to go with the bigger prize despite the fact that three other national lotteries will be taking place on New Year's Eve.

By far this is not the largest millennium lottery in the world. Millennium Lottery 2000 has been introduced with a variety of 6 different lottery games with the grand prize approaching $100-million to be given away at the end of the year. Several US states are planning a millennium lottery that could have a grand prize of $300-million but so far, the game has not been sanctioned officially.
