STORY: This is London is reporting that hundreds of NHS staff plan to walk out of London hospitals this Christmas so they can cash in on - or avoid working during - the millennium celebrations. The article says nurses and midwives, dismayed at being offered only a £150 bonus for working Millennium Eve, plan to hand in their notices at the end of November, go on holiday or get lucrative work as agency staff during the celebrations, and then return to their old jobs in the New Year. Because of the shortage of skilled NHS staff, hospitals will have little choice but to take them back. The Evening Standard has learned that at least 20 specialist nurses at the intensive care unit at the Royal London Hospital in east London plan to hand in their notice one month before Millennium Eve. The Royal College of Midwives has warned that many of its members are contemplating similar action at a time when there is expected to be a baby boom. Many midwives may not go on holiday but will work as agency staff in the hope that they can earn up to £500 for a single shift. DATE: 5/25/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
