STORY: Cash incentives look set to encourage people to ignore the Millemmium celebrations in favour of going to work, according to a new survey. According to the BBC, more than 6% of the 2000 people questioned were offered a bonus to work during the millennium celebrations, revealing payouts were the exception rather than the rule. But other surveys have shown employers were prepared to pay six times normal salary or cash bonuses of more than £500 to staff who have to be on duty over the millennium weekend. The entertainment and information technology (IT) sectors were most likely to be prepared to pay extra money to staff who had to work. More than a third of pub and club staff and a quarter of IT workers had already been promised more money. Meanwhile, Robin Guernier, the head of Taskforce 2000, says he is seriously concerned that councils, police authorities, health trusts and emergency services are nowhere near ready. According to the BBC, The Daily Telegraph says it has seen a leaked copy of the report which shows the Metropolitan Police is one of eight forces at severe risk of disruption. And Guernier told BBC News "If things are not improved we are going to see a massive degradation of the services people get." DATE: 5/21/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
