STORY: According to New Zealand's The Press, Canterbury's most distant golf club, the Chatham Islands, intends to become the first nine-hole club to hold a tournament in the new millennium. The Chatham Islands club, one of 38 affiliated to the Canterbury Golf Association, is organising an amateur event -- open to members of any golf club -- at dawn on the first day of the 21st century. Chatham Islands' time is 45 minutes ahead of New Zealand mainland time. However, the Russley club in Christchurch plans to be the first to hit off into the new millennium. Organizers of the "First Strike" tournament, promoted by the Christchurch Casino, intend to invite 72 golfers from around the globe to compete in a shotgun start floodlit tournament at Russley, which will tee off at midnight on December 31, 1999. An 18-hole tournament is also planned at Fairlie with the first six holes from midnight and, after a long breakfast, a dawn start for the last 12 holes.
