STORY: Reports of Duchess wanting to drop Times Square Ball are untrue There have been a flood of stories about what Britain's royals will be doing on New Year's Eve. A report from London newspaper said the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson was trying to work her way into the annual ball dropping ceremony in New York's Times Square. Now a spokesperson for the sometimes controversial read-head says Fergie "isn't seeking" any involvement in the ceremony. "Fergie is not pursuing it," Howard Rubenstein told the New York Post. Rubenstein is a Fergie's official spokesperson and is also doing publicity for the ball-dropping festivities for the Times Square Business Improvement District. Rubenstein told the Post that Tony O'Reilly, a friend of the duchess who's also the chairman of Waterford Crystal, started the Fergie idea. The crystal maker is designing the special millennium ball and Fergie also is a spokeswoman for Waterford in the United States. Despite the denial, Times Square officials have not selected their annual "ball-dropping honoree" that will accompany Mayor Guiliani on the podium at the annual event. Traditionally, the person picked is a heroic or inspirational figure. Last year, the honor went to paralyzed Chinese gymnast Sang Lan.
