STORY:
French Want New Marianne For Millennium

Countries mayors will choose woman to represent the French Republic

The mayors of France are doing what most likely would impossible and politically incorrect in the United States. They will decide soon from a list of France's most beautiful women, who will be the new Marianne, the female figure representing the French Republic.

The 36,000-strong Association of Mayors of France has narrowed the candidates down to five-two supermodels, two television journalists and a popular singer. The final vote will take place in October according to Reuters.

The short list includes supermodels Laetitia Casta and Estelle Hallyday, interview show hostess Daniela Lumbroso and Nathalie Simon - a windsurfing champion who hosts entertainment shows for young audiences - and singer Patricia Kaas, a waif-like pop star from Lorraine popular in France and Germany.

The winner will succeed film star Catherine Deneuve as the model for the bust of Marianne that decorates city halls around the country as a symbol of the state and will be a symbol for the new millennium.
