STORY: Maverick newsman will document his voyage for The Travel Channel Imagine being a fish swimming along the International Dateline in the mid-Pacific on New Year's Eve. All of a sudden, the champagne pops, fireworks go off from a flotilla over large cruise liners celebrating New Year's Eve straddling an imaginary line in the water. And in the middle of all this, you spy a bushy haired man with a big mustache dramatizing the moment with bright lights and TV camera. Even if you were a fish, you'd have to say that could only be Geraldo. The maverick newsman is planning to spend the final moments of 1999 on a 70-foot ketch called the Voyager near the International Dateline, possibly near Somoa as part of a travel documentary for The Travel Channel. It will be part of two, one-hour documentaries called "Sail to the Century with Geraldo Rivera". The first hour will air in December with the hour that contains the New Year's Eve segment airing later in the year. "I just want to be among the first to experience the new millennium, and that's why we're doing it," Rivera told The San Francisco Chronicle in TV press tour. "That's why the date line." Contractual reasons possibly prevent him from appearing in one of the millennium TV shows. Geraldo has been on an around the world sail with his wife and kids for two years. It hasn't been a continuous sail, but from time to time, he and his family have been flying to their boat, The Voyager, where they last left it to continue the trip. Currently the boat is in Australia. "I kind of think of it as National Geographic meets the Loud family," Rivera told The Chronicle. "Or MTV's Real People."
