STORY: Great Neck New York's plan to celebrate the millennium with several community wide events has drawn the attention of the White House. According to a story appearing in the New York Daily News, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton named the tiny village of Great Neck Plaza one of nine White House Millennium Communities in the country. A Great Neck Millennium Committee that was established last year has drawn up plans for the celebration to increase community spirit and visibility. The Great Neck Chamber of Commerce is spearheading the effort. All nine villages, as well as the unincorporated areas comprising the Great Neck peninsula, are involved. The events will include a video retrospective, a student essay contest and a raffle for a $2,000 shopping spree in downtown shops. About six months ago, community leaders received a questionnaire from the White House asking if the village was doing anything to mark the millennium. They filled out the questionnaire and sent it back to the White House. Other White House Millennium Communities include El Paso, Tex., Kansas City, Philadelphia, an Eskimo village in Alaska and Revere, Mass. There's no federal money involved in the selection, but it does carry prestige. Each White House Millennium Community can use a special White House Millennium logo for their Web sites, stationery and fund-raising efforts. Also, there will be a special link between each White House Millennium Community's Web page and the White House Web page. In the case of Great Neck Plaza, the Web page is the one run by the Chamber of Commerce, www.greatneckchamber.org. DATE: 5/18/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
