STORY: Packages and airfare for New Year's Eve are hard to find and expensive Hawaii ranks right up there with Las Vegas, New Zealand and London as the most popular travel spots to celebrate the dawning of the Year 2000. Finding reasonably priced travel packages, hotel rooms and airfare without losing a limb is becoming increasing difficult in all these areas. For awhile, travel agents were claiming Hawaii was sold out. Now as New Year's day draws closer, more millennium travel packages are coming back on to the market, but airfare is still at a premium. A spokesperson for Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays, a popular Hawaiian travel package company, reportedly says they are still offering packages at hotels that claim to be sold out. On average, Hawaiian hotels reportedly are setting prices 15% higher than the rack rate, the highest rate available. Hotels are also asking for up front payment of a minimum of seven nights and are restricting arrival and departure dates. But, as New Year's Eve draws closer, travel agents expect the hotels to loosen up their restrictions in order to reach 100-percent capacity. DATE: 07/28/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
